Mother Nature certainly likes her routine. Global warming aside, she cycles through the same processes, in the same order, doing things the same way they always have been done.

Within that cycle, of course, variations exist—a dry winter or a mild fall—but we always can rely on the rhythm. One season follows the other. It’s a comfortable predictability in a world that often seems to be wildly unpredictable.

Luckily, it is possible to tap into that natural cycle, to bring into both our personal and professional lives a greater sense of flow and order.

It’s time for one of my favorite seasons. Is spring one of yours? In spring, everything is glistening, green and new. There is a feeling of expansion and a sense of renewal and reawakening. Seeds start to grow. People get outside more, becoming reacquainted with their gardens. We take on spring-cleaning projects and clear out clutter.

Have you considered how this season of new beginnings will impact you? Are you ready to reap what you sow? Here are some ideas to consider for both your personal and professional growth.

A few personal activities that align with spring:

What have you always longed to do? Perhaps you want to write a book or teach a class or foster a child. Let this be the year you take action on your dream! Find out what is keeping you from moving forward. Allow the rebirth of spring to inspire you to achieve your dreams and passions!

Is this the time to start developing a healthier lifestyle? We see our neighbors out walking dogs, jogging down the sidewalk or even playing an adult softball game. Challenge yourself to move from inspiration to action! Best of all, you’ll be able to leverage your new, invigorated burst of energy as you work toward meeting your other goals.

Notice, as well, if the seeds you’ve already planted are starting to sprout. Tend to them carefully, giving them ample time to grow. Perhaps this is a personal relationship. Have you noticed a positive change? Remember, it doesn’t have to be the BIG one. Are you curious about where this could lead? Take a risk and see where it takes you!

As a parent we are always looking for those sprouts of change. Celebrate the opportunity to cultivate the crops of our future! Recently I attended a Broadway History Class with my dramatic daughter and a Bible study class with my very intuitive daughter. You can imagine the conversation that followed each session! However, you can have unexpected quality time during a ride home from a practice, at the dinner table or even when you are planting a garden together. Spring is a perfect season for exploring these opportunities.

A few professional activities that align with spring:

Plant your own seeds by designing one or two new products or services for your organization. It’s a gift to allow you to dream. Always imagine how your success will look and feel. We often miss our own successes. What may seem crazy in the beginning could be the start of a really positive idea. So, give yourself lots of time for brainstorming and collaboration before honing your ideas. Sometimes it even helps to conceive the idea, walk away from it, and then edit your creation. Fine-tuning is the key!

When you’re ready, create a detailed launch plan with action steps and a timeline. Have you ever seen a brilliant idea die because the implementation seemed overwhelming? As we coaches suggest, break it down into manageable parts. Maybe even “storyboard” the process using simple post-its to organize (and re-organize) your tasks and timelines. However, as a special mentor of mine always reminded me, you eventually you have to “shoot.” You simply can’t wait for the ultimate perfection.

By tailoring some of what you do to the natural rhythms that allow, sustain and renew all life on earth, you might just find that your life and work are likewise supported, as they deepen, grow and prosper.

Ask yourself what other seeds you would like to sow—and what others already are starting to sprout. I encourage you to post your stories on the P3 Power Blast blog. You may be the one to plant the right seed and harvest an opportunity for another powerful, passionate and purposeful woman!

A woman is entering her “empty nest” period. She has been very accomplished and recognized in her area of expertise. However, for some reason, she increasingly feels a sense of unrest. With her new freedom comes a time to explore what comes next in her life. It may be partially what she will do in personal life, but it also centers on how she views herself and her career. Even more importantly, how will she make a difference? When someone speaks of her accomplishments, just what will they say? Do you know someone like this? Or perhaps, is this a description of you?

Career transitions, whether voluntary or involuntary, can be stressful. If you have had the security of a previous success, it is often difficult to “step out” to the next stage. After all, you have worked for years to become comfortable. Perhaps being comfortable is no longer enough! If you are embarking on a major mid-life career transition, I offer some tips to consider:

1. Take an honest look at yourself. What are your strengths, challenges, marketable skills? Evaluate your past experiences—volunteer successes, workplace accomplishments and valuable family experiences. How have these influenced—positively or negatively—your transitions? How can they help you with your next transition? Which skills may you transfer?

2. Step up your self-care. Major changes are both physically and emotionally taxing. You need self-care now more than ever. It’s ok to be inwardly focused during this time. Many women find that it is an ideal time to engage in some career or personality assessments. Give yourself the gift of self-exploration and appreciation.

3. Engage your curiosity. What went wrong, or right? What could you have done better? What worked really well? Is there anything you would change, if you could? Your world is an empty palate. Paint your own portrait!

4. Focus on what you want and less on what you don’t want. Keep your eye on the prize. The investment you make in focus will pay you multiple dividends.

5. Find support. Since your transition affects your family as well, it may be better to seek the outside support of friends or professionals. An outside resource may just give you the objective viewpoint that could make the difference for you. They will push you to next level when your loved ones are too “polite” to be assertive.

6. Work on your own thoughts. Often your own “self-talk” can be your worst enemy. Calm your fears and reinforce your sense of hope and happiness. A positive attitude is a great benefit.

7. Reassure (or avoid) those who are threatened by, or jealous of, the change. It’s too easy to be pulled down by negative influences. Be protective of your environment. You desire to be in a supportive and forward-thinking atmosphere.

8. Create your own rite of passage. Ceremony and ritual help with all transitions. Celebrate your small successes! Eventually they will add up to your milestones toward achievement.

9. Let go of how things were “supposed to be” and accept “how things are.” Don’t allow your mind to keep replaying those same mistakes from your past. Find appreciation for what is. By now you have lots of stories and experiences. Focus on the future while appreciating the experience you have gained from the past.

10. Keep things in perspective. Or try on a new perspective. Don’t get stuck. Remember, the only constant is change. Wouldn’t you rather drive change than be driven by it? Relish the opportunity to control your destiny!

A successful career transition is just that. It doesn’t happen overnight. There will be ups and downs. However, you’ve been through this. You are at an ideal stage to consider a little risk. Enjoy what lies ahead. In the end, only you will be the one to judge the success of your next transition!

I had the pleasure of speaking with P3 Pearl, Jeannette Fitzwater on a cold wintry day. We both snuggled up to a candid conversation about her vision and passion for developing and leading others into their greatest potential.

I was fascinated with Jeanette’s journey of success however what most fascinated me was the golden nuggets she offered for women during this particular time of year.

We are upon a new year and we’re all looking at new goals and visions. We often choose new things or recommit to old goals. Jeannette offered strong recommendations that will catapult you into a successful experience in 2011.

As you might imagine Jeannette who lives in the roles of mother, wife and Senior Vice President-Director of Corporate Services, she has mastered a few things around seeing a vision, setting goals and accomplishing them.

She shares what has made her successful throughout the years and we are certain that if you applied you too can gain new experiences of success. We invite you to listen in on the candid interview with a note pad to write down your goals. Determine your plan of action and find new ways of making your every dream a reality in 2011.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is filled with The Year in Review stories. What were the biggest songs and movies and TV shows of the year? Who had the best year? Who had the worst? What stories got the most attention?

When I do my goal setting workshops, I always start by having people do their own personal Year in Review. What happened this past year that was good? Maybe you found a great job or fell in love. You could have stopped smoking. Maybe you made some significant revelations about your life. Maybe you welcomed some wonderful new people into your life. Maybe you removed some not-so-wonderful people from your life. Or maybe you just found a hairstyle you loved. Big or small, there were a number of great things that happened this year and now it’s a good time to acknowledge what worked, what went right.

In my workshops, I spend twice as long on what went right as I do on what went wrong or what didn’t go as expected or planned. We tend to overlook the good and focus on the bad.

The bad things – the disappointments, the failures, the losses -seem to always be right in front of us, in the forefront of our minds and on the tips of our tongues. The good – the successes, small victories, the happy moments – aren’t on the surface. We have to dig for them, sometimes very deeply.

As we prepare to go into 2011, take a little time to commend yourself for the things you have accomplished this year.

Celebrate you.

By Rev. Lady Diannia Baty

It is so quiet outside except for the birds. The birds sing when the sky is starting its gray glow towards sunshine. I am easing into my day with my second cup of coffee. I am feeling pretty good as I view all the efforts put forth yesterday. It is the kind of feeling of satisfaction a gardener gets when they have just put in their garden and the next day they walk out and survey the finished product. Each day a little more growth will be displayed. All the plants will respond from the gardener’s care and energy. The gardener just knows the fruits of his or her labors will bear bounty.

Now, I will leap-frog into manifestation and how we get in our own way when trying to work this universal law.

The first order of the day is to meditate. So many seekers on the spiritual path do not take this seriously. If you aren’t meditating then you will have issues with just about everything. When the mind is quiet and you have become still, you will experience so much love and peace and you will know God in an entirely different way. This quiet still place is where you can experience heaven on earth now. This is what I call the GOD ZONE. This is where the communication with the creator is a whole new ball game. If you skip this then your manifesting prowess will be weak. If you want to master manifestation then don’t skip this. I repeat…don’t skip meditating! It is helpful for beginners to do guided meditations with a facilitator so buy some cd’s of guided meditations.

The second thing to do is get clear about what you want to bring about, real clear. The universe does not respond to cloudy requests. Vocalize it with positive affirmations. There should be absolutely no negativity in these affirmations. Do not use words such as … Need or Want. The word need is showing doubt and neediness and the word want is showing a state of want or lack. State these affirmations as though what you desire has already taken place. Get comfortable with this. If it feels silly to you that is all the more reason to keep doing it. You will be moving toward a feeling of worthiness.

The third thing is to write it down. Describe what it is and how it looks and feels. Cut out photos or illustrations that affirm it. Create a manifesting journal and paste all the cutouts on a visualization board. I have a cut out of a million dollar bill on my bulletin board. I see it every day.

The fourth thing to do is to Visualize, Visualize, and Visualize. Close your eyes and picture yourself as already having what it is that you are working at bringing about. For anyone who doesn’t regularly meditate this may be more difficult but keep at it and it will get stronger. It feels wonderful to do this and brings about all the possibilities. Put as much detail into this exercise as you can. If you are seeing yourself speaking on a stage somewhere, then what are you wearing? See the audience packed. Picture yourself at ease and powerful. Also what are you speaking about? If you want to go on a trip to some far away exotic place start watching videos of this place and cut out and collect photos and brochures. Do you homework and the more you do these things the closer you get to obtaining your wish, goal or desire to fruition.

Unfortunately, many people will go through life with a sense of dissatisfaction or that something is missing. Wondering what their life would have been like, if only they would have had the courage and confidence to follow their dream. Although, you may have followed a professional path that led you to a safe, secure career, you still have the opportunity to fulfill that dream. Or, maybe you have found the company you wish to work for, but you need the extra motivation and courage to apply for that next level position. You need to look into your inner self, and determine what has kept you from pursuing these goals. This can be difficult to do on your own. Believe it or not, you are not alone! Many people are turning to success coaching to help them build better lives, personally and professionally.

A life coach will help you discover who you really are, and what truly motivates you. Life coaching is centered on you, and will help you dig deep into yourself, to find those true goals and dreams, and give you the tools to reach beyond your comfort level to achieve these goals. It is an exclusive partnership based on trust. It will take time and commitment, but it will also require action. A life coach will encourage you to stretch beyond, and bring out the best in you. Together, you will work with your strengths, to bring about success.

Coaching helps you realize your potential, and change limitations and obstacles into opportunities. As a professional, you have the desire and skills to succeed, but sometimes determining which path to take to move towards these goals is difficult. A life coach can help you create goals to advance you forward into what your vision of the future will be. Life coaching can help you become more creative in achieving your goals. It will assist you in changing your attitude and behavior into a more strategic direction. It will help you learn ways to deal with confrontation, conflict, and change. And, will give you the tools to balance your professional and family life.

The power to create a life you love is within you. It is important to realize that this power is in you. You have the power to renovate yourself. You cannot rely on the outside world to determine how successful you will be. Many people fall into this trap, because they feel it is up to “the boss” to give them that promotion. Generally, the boss is looking out for his dreams, and not focusing on yours. You are responsible for the avenues you have chosen to get to where you are now. You have to take charge of your dreams.

Will a life coach benefit you? Yes, if you have a genuine desire to make changes in your life personally and professionally. Yes, if you are willing to commit time and energy to create the life and career you want. Yes, if you can develop a trusting relationship with a life coach, yet not become dependent. Yes, if you understand that becoming successful is not just goal setting, but is where the heart and mind work together. Yes, if you are willing to develop skills and goals, and act on them. And yes, if you are willing to accept the importance of being consistent, practicing skills, and producing results. A life coach will help you see things from a new perspective, will encourage you to set your life goals, and will have complete faith in your abilities. Coaching will provide you with guidance and strategies that you can apply to your life to build up your confidence and success.

I am positive you have the ability to be successful in reaching your goals. Whether it is a promotion you are striving for, starting your own business or completely changing your career, I can help you change your aspects on life, which will, in turn, build your road to success.

Know your target and stay focused.

There are so many ways to network and so many places to network. But the most common complaints I hear from people about networking are:

You can’t possibly join that many associations – it’s too costly.

I don’t get any business from that networking group, so I am dropping out.

I don’t like that group.

I was very lucky to work with a marketing coach early on who advised me to do several things to avoid the above pitfalls. However, I do believe there is a lot of hard work involved, which can result in a lot of busy work if you don’t stay focused. Busy work does not produce revenue, business work does.

Here are my suggestions for purposeful networking:

1. Identify your target clients. This sounds easy, but take some time to work with someone who can help you know your market. Be specific. For example, if you ran an in-home non-medical caregiver business, your ideal target client profile would be: A working mom in her 50s who has the responsibility for an aging parent. We’ll call that target client Kathy, and we’ll use Kathy as our example for the balance of this article. (Details matter when describing your target audience.)

2. Where do your target clients hang out? Or to use another term, who are your market makers? Market makers are an entity or person who hangs out with your target clients. For example, Kathy likes to hang out in her professional associations and garden clubs. So join the places where Kathy hangs out. Here are some samples of market makers:

a. Business trade associations. i.e. NAWBO, eWomen, WPO.

b. Fortune 500 companies. i.e. Bank of America, Duke energy, Mecklenburg County School system.

c. Non-profit organizations. i.e. Goodwill, CharlotteSave (or AmericanSave), United way.

d. Hobby clubs. Rose and garden clubs, poker clubs, bird watching clubs, running clubs.

e. Strategic Alliances partners. Hospital, nursing homes, CPA’s, financial advisors.

f. Religious groups. Church, Bible study group, Buddha study group.

g. Form your own group. i.e. Heart Link network.

It really depends on who your target clients are. Choose your market makers wisely, because you’ll invest a lot of time, energy, and money into the group. Some may not turn out as well as expected.

3. Examine why you are doing what you’re doing. People don’t care about WHAT you’re selling. They want to know you and why are you doing what you’re doing. I find this is most difficult for people to define, including myself; work with a coach to form your answer. If you can articulate a story, it’s an instant connection for people. For example, Roberta Franum, owner of the HomeInstead Franchise, provides non-medical in-home care. She tells people that her 92-year-old mother-in-law Eleanor lives with them. She started her business because they had an aging parent to care for and didn’t have a solution. Today, Eleanor has been cared for by HomeInstead for over 10 years.

4. Clarify your 1-minute commercial with benefits first. Tell people the benefits of working with you. For example, benefits for Kathy; it will give Kathy more time to do what she wants and must do without the worry of taking care of her parent 24/7.

5. Create connections to Kathy. You’re not going to meet Kathy in your networking meetings. But you’ll meet lots of people who know Kathy. Your job is to make connections.

6. Get involved in active groups. And since you have to be there on regular basis for networking purposes, you might just get involved or even serve on the board or on a committee. Be your personal walking brand and showcase your capabilities through volunteering.

7. Follow up within 48 hours after any networking event. People have a very short memory of whom they meet, so follow-up within 48 hours from your event. You can follow-up with a call or email – which ever works best for your business.

8. Be consistent in showing up. Once you decide who your market makers are, be consistent and show up with intention. Your intention is not just to build awareness of your service, but also to form valuable connections. And don’t just show up at the meetings, but stay in front of the group with updates on your business and valuable tips that may help theirs.

After so many years of networking within my defined market markers, I’ve personally found the most effective way of networking is to be involved with a non-profit organization that I’m passionate about. If you follow that passion, you may find yourself on a committee working on projects which showcase your capabilities and who you are. Everyone involved in a non-profit organization shares the same reason to be there – passion about what the non-profit is doing.

Be purposeful in your networking. Your time is priceless, so use it wisely.

by Karyn L. Beach

Jessica had recently lost her job. To say that she and her immediate supervisor didn’t get along would have been an understatement. In fact, on several occasions, Jessica went over her supervisor’s head and took her complaints directly to their manager. Finally, after months of conflict and tension, the two women had a confrontation and Jessica left stormed off the job, mid-shift, in a huff.

The manager called her at home and offered to mediate a meeting between Jessica and her supervisor. As Jessica recounted this story to me, she said proudly that she refused to attend the meeting. She couldn’t stand the supervisor and told her boss’s boss that she would not even sit in the same room as her supervisor much less talk to her.

So, Jessica lost her job.

Here we were, months later, Jessica was still out of work, and she told that story with pride. You can hear the “I showed them” intonation of her voice.

So, I asked her how she felt about what she had done. Of course, she was proud. In Jessica’s mind, it was a victory because she stood her ground. She didn’t let the supervisor or the manager get the best of her.

I followed up with another question. I smiled and asked her how many bills could she pay with that pride? Would they accept it as payment in the grocery store or at the gas station? She was speechless.

Jessica is still riding off the high of the emotional victory. Yet, the reality of her situation tells a different story. She might have ‘showed them’ but they still have jobs. They can still meet their financial obligations. They aren’t out there pounding the pavement in the worst job market that many of us have seen in our lifetimes.

Emotions are powerful and intense and necessary. A life without a mixture of happiness, sadness, passion, laughter and even a little anger or righteous indignation wouldn’t be much of a life. But, we have to learn how to effectively harness the power of our feelings. If we don’t, we can end up jobless and/or alone.

Taking back things said and done during moments of intense emotion is about as difficult as putting toothpaste back in the tube. It isn’t going to work.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your cool, when your emotions start to heat up:

Leave: When possible remove yourself from the situation. Even if you can just spend five minutes in the bathroom or in your car, step away.

Bite Your Tongue: Don’t respond with anger, sarcasm or condescension. The best thing to do is to not say anything until you calm down.

Vent to a Disinterested Party: Vent to someone who has absolutely nothing to do with the situation or the people involved. Venting to family and co-workers just puts the rumor mill into overdrive and increases the chances for hurt feelings, confusion and manipulation.

Life Coach, Lisa Thomas of the P3 Group, gives Valonda tips on being an effective time manager.

Ever wonder how it is that your friend, co-worker or associate always seems to get more done than you? After all they have the same 24 hours as you do, don’t they? Even Donald Trump and Oprah Winfrey have that same 24 hours, so what gives?

Time and money seem to be the two biggest challenges people face. They both seem to be a tough nut to crack, but we’ll tackle time for now and come back to money on another occasion.

I’ve broken down four major areas to focus in on being an effective time manager.

1. Personal Productivity
2. Delegating Tasks
3. Managing Results
4. Leverage

Before I get into explaining the four areas, consider that managing your time is easy, very easy. What I mean is the “to do” of managing time is easy. What gets in the way of people being effective time managers is their lack of vision or purpose and power and choice over their thoughts about what has to be done. In the absence of these, the “to do” of time management becomes a great challenge. So, know your vision and do the work on your internal thoughts.

Now, let’s just take a look at Personal Productivity for a moment.

Start with what needs to be done. You might even ask yourself, “Am I the only one that can do these things listed?” Most often, people think they are the only ones that can do something which stifles the possibility of expansion and growth. So, it’s imperative that you check the list and be truthful about it. If you are the only one to do it, then make it a priority and don’t waste time getting it done. Do it immediately.

Be sure to put things in a calendar as well. Things placed in a calendar will ensure more so than not that it gets done. It’s hard to get things done when you don’t have a system for remembering to do it.

Focus on one task at a time with all of your attention on that one task. Things get done faster when you give your attention to it. Multitasking only delays the process of completion; focus and complete each task within the time allotted.

When it comes to Delegating Tasks, it’s imperative to know what needs to be done. Remember the old saying “first things first”. Determine the things that need to be attended to first and foremost. When scanning the list, you’ll want to keep in mind the things only you can do or are the best at doing. Whatever is left will be delegated and given to someone else; someone who is effective, competent, experienced and has the ability to produce.

Often times, we delegate to those who don’t have skill, the time or are ineffective. Keep in mind, you’re soliciting the right person for the task.

If you delegate the task, it makes sense to the Manage Results, right? If you do this effectively you’ll delegate, manage and focus only on the results that are being produced or not produced. Now, this does not negate you from putting things in your calendar. In order to manage the results, you’ll need to register them somewhere, so be sure they are in your calendar.

There are a few things to keep in mind when managing results.

1. You must identify milestones and timelines and put them in your calendar.
2. Be in regular communication with the person(s) you’ve delegated the task to.
3. Track their progress and evaluate their results.

Leverage allows you to get more done in the same amount of time; the same 24 hours everyone has. It is a combination of personal productivity, delegating tasks, managing results and optimizing other people’s time, money, efforts, resources and systems. When you are leveraging, you look from a place of “how” to get things done. In essence, you’re strategically looking to see how you can best utilize the resources you have and interestingly enough, you’ll discover more is available to you.

I mentioned Donald Trump. When Donald Trump shares his vision and mission with his management team, he in essence shares with his entire team. It funnels all the way down to housekeeping in his hotels. He leverages his resources to get more done.

These four areas are how you can get your vision out in the world in a big, big way.

We all have the same 24 hours, how are you using yours?

Try these on for size and see just how much you can get done.

We’ve all heard the buzz term; balance, work life-balance or something like that. It seems as women, we’re always in the mode of trying to find that happy medium where we’re able to somehow take care of ourselves and take care of others. We’re on a constant quest to have it all; it isn’t always easy but we try. So, I took myself on a journey to interview a woman who seems to have found that balance in her life and I thought you would enjoy her journey.

I had the privilege of sitting down to talk with this amazing woman who has a personality bigger than life. Possessing a small frame and a quiet demeanor, she fills a room with joy when she’s living her passion. I met her on the set of the My Carolina Today show where she’s a co-host and I was struck by her presence - so welcoming and warm. I couldn’t help but want to know more about her.

This P3 Pearl is Valonda Calloway.

For me, Valonda embodies balance; the balance all women are striving to find. But after spending time with her I found out it wasn’t always easy for her to balance the many roles she has. She’s a community leader, mentor, television show host, wife, mother and friend. These are all pretty big responsibilities that require stamina, dedication, and commitment.

Valonda shares her struggles of balancing life and the moment that she overcame the internal battles we’ve all had to face: when to say “no”, ask for help, and take new inventory of life. She takes us on a journey of the day her outlook on balance changed. She was and still is a dedicated, hard working woman, but the day her outlook changed, so did her actions and reactions to life.

Sit back and enjoy my candid interview with Valonda Calloway. She opens up about the joy of having fun, working, being a mom and mentoring young girls. She is balancing it all and you’ll find just how possible it is for you too!…Lisa Thomas, President of The P3 Group, Inc.
